Fort Huachuca and Museum
Travel back in time to the days of Geronimo and the famous Buffalo soldiers with a visit to Fort Huachuca, located in the Huachuca Mountains of Cochise County in southeast Arizona, just 15 miles north of the Mexico-United States border. Fort Huachuca was built in 1877 to guard against attacks by Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo. After Geronimo's surrender in 1886, the fort remained because of its strategic location on the border.
The "Buffalo Soldiers", an elite black cavalry corps of the U.S. Army, resided at this fort for twenty years and was assigned to guard the border during World War I. Today, the fort is currently a United States Army installation and covers more than 70,000 acres. Visitors have the opportunity to visit numerous historical buildings including the Fort Huachuca Historical Museum, originally used as the post chapel. The museum is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekends; although free of charge, a donation is suggested. Click Here for more information.
